We continue to revolutionize gambling entertainment through engaging experiences that build and benefit communities. We operate national and provincial lotteries in partnership with 3500 retail partners, provide the games, technology & oversight to 37 brick & mortar casinos, and operate a safe secure and 100% legal online gambling presence PlayNow.com. In our recently completed fiscal year, BCLC generated a record $1.636 billion in net income to the Province of B.C. to support First Nations, local host governments, health care, education and community programs across the province.
The Team
You will be a part of our 36 person senior leadership team, leading a team of 10 employees with direct reports in social purpose, community and stakeholder relations, sustainability and indigenous relations. We’re very collaborative, support each other and ideate together to amplify our impact across British Columbia.
The Role
The Director, Social Purpose & Community and Stakeholder Engagement develops and achieves the strategic vision for Social Purpose & community and stakeholder engagement that will drive and support BCLC’s corporate strategy. This role champions Social Purpose, sustainability, and stakeholder engagement internally at BCLC, with service providers, and with a variety of external stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities
- Leads the development and execution of the plan to achieve the vision, goals, and objectives of social purpose, creating and adapting business strategies to address societal trends that will affect the business. Uses social innovation tools and methods to inform strategic planning.
- Leads BCLC’s stakeholder and community engagement initiatives including the development, execution, and measurement of a community relations program.
- Leads the development and implementation of an enterprise sustainability strategy and program which supports BCLC’s Social Purpose vision.
- Strategically communicates the Social Purpose vision across the enterprise, working with the executive and senior leadership to implement social purpose strategies, measure against targets and develops workplans, which align with the corporate strategy.
- Strives to responsibly grow BCLC’s Social Purpose and sustainability ambitions including but not limited to potential impacts on the community, environment, public and government. Achieves this by working collaboratively with the team and external stakeholders.
- Leads development and implementation of the corporate social purpose and sustainability performance standards, metrics (aggregate and initiative based) and a reporting program, which regularly communicates results to key internal and external stakeholders.
- Identifies and capitalizes on opportunities to proactively and collaboratively engage stakeholders and community in pursuit of BCLC’s business, social purpose and sustainability efforts.
- Leverages the enthusiasm and spirit of our 1200 employees in the development and implementation of BCLC’s corporate sponsorship programs.
- Develops and manages operational budgets and develops business cases for new initiatives/expenditures.
- Fosters a creative, innovative, and results-oriented environment through effective resource planning, decision-making support, and individual coaching and empowerment.
- Develops and nurtures relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify areas of alignment opportunities for partnership(s).
- Provides strong people leadership and strategic direction, ensuring the department has the right mix of capabilities, people skills, technical training, and mentoring programs in place. Responsible for career development and inspiring personal growth of the team.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
- University Degree in Sustainability, Business or Communications or related discipline;
- Master’s Degree would be an asset;
- 8 – 10 years of relevant experience, including at least 5 years’ experience in a managerial capacity;
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
Technical Requirements
- Strong understanding of and commitment to social purpose and sustainability; how to lead and manage change to drive an organization toward social purpose and sustainability;
- Excellent listening, influencing, partnering and collaboration skills with external and internal stakeholders;
- Strong business acumen with a results-oriented focus - a reputation as a seasoned individual with demonstrated abilities in negotiation, problem-solving, priority-setting and setting key performance indicators;
- Expert knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of community, stakeholder, and intergovernmental relations;
- Ability to exercise good judgement and flexibility in responding to multiple, sometimes overlapping, enterprise needs and expectations;
- Demonstrated ability to exercise appropriate confidentiality and manage highly sensitive/confidential information appropriately;
- Strong team building, leadership, people management and relationship-building skills to manage reporting staff in diverse functional areas;
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous situations, with a holistic approach to problem solving;
- Strong understanding of trends, risks, opportunities, and issues facing BCLC and the gaming industry, and BC regulations and compliance requirements.
